The Shadow of Umbrella

March 21, 2009

Welcome to Umbrella Corp. Here you will see the entire behind the scenes process of the creation of “Resident Evil: The Shadow of Umbrella;” a fangame thought up in the mind of MarthTrinity. This is your HQ for the latest updates in the game’s progress; character roster, stages, story, music, items, gameplay…all of it will be featured here within time. As of now, the site is still in the very early stages of developement; details are very sketchy at the moment for the game and that’s exactly how I want to keep it.

For fans of the series, I sincerely hope you enjoy the game I’m creating…perhaps one day I can send it off to Capcom and see what they think. Regardless, to the fans of the series, I’m sure you’ll enjoy what I have lined up; a character roster designed to cover all aspects of the series from the very original all the way up to Resident Evil 5. Both sides of the battle have also been considered; for the first time in Resident Evil, players will be able to choose from not only a wide variety of fan favorite characters like Chris, Jill, Leon and Wesker…but they’ll also be able to choose from a variety of the series’ trademark creatures. As far as series representation goes; every game in the series (aside from any mobile phone games) is repped in one way or another; even the more obscure games such as Gaiden, Dead Aim and Survivor are represented in one way, shape or form here.

What I first and foremost wish to accomplish is to give people who aren’t fans of Resident Evil an inside look at what makes the series so interesting and, most imporantly, so fun. Which is what this entire project is about to me; I have no programming skills at all, not even in Flash so in reality, this entire game concept is just a pipe dream. The chances of it actually coming to any kind of fruitation are very slim to none. Regardless, I hope you enjoy keeping up with this project; I know I’ll enjoy making it.

How To Play

November 21, 2009

Here is your controller; the Sixaxis Controller for the Sony PlayStation 3. “Resident Evil: The Shadow of Umbrella” is an entirely PlayStation exclusive game designed specifically for the PlayStation 3 and will be controlled entirely with the Sixaxis Controller. Read below for the controls Shadow of Umbrella will use. First of all however, we’ll go over the gameplay mechanics.

Shadow of Umbrella is a 2.5D fighting game, similar to the Super Smash Bros. series made by Nintendo. Shadow of Umbrella however is more closely related mechanic wise to traditional fighters. Each character has a health meter representing their current health. This will change as the player takes damage through various forms…

Health Bar

Fine: The player is at full (or near it) health. Their health meter is green signifying Fine status.

Caution: The player has taken some damage and has about half of their health left. At this level, human characters will walk slightly slower as they’ve taken quite a bit of physical punishment. The health meter turns yellow signifying Caution status.

Danger: The player has taken near fatal damage and is at extreme risk of dying. At this level, human characters will move considerably slower, visibly limping. The character’s health meter turns red at this level signifying Danger status.

Dying: Once the player has taken enough damage, they enter Dying status. At this level, any character, human or otherwise, will move very slowly and be entirely unable to attack. The only option here is to try and escape your opponent while hammering on the  button. Tapping the button raises your health slowly out of Dying status and into Danger status. Obviously, if put into Dying you’ll want to hammer on the  in order to give yourself a chance at survival.

Finishing Off An Opponent

Once your opponent is put into a Dying status, that’s when you’ll want to finish them off. Finishing off a Dying opponent is as simple as running up to them and pressing the  button. Upon pressing the button, your character will perform their finishing move and kill the opponent. This move varies depending on the character and can sometimes have incredibly short range or incredibly long range. The moment your opponent goes into Dying, chase them down and finish them off before they can recover.

There are, however, other ways to finish off an opponent. Almost all stages in Shadow of Umbrella have some sort of stage hazard (these can be turned off however) that can kill your opponent (or yourself!) or at the very least cause damage to them. These hazards can affect anyone, human or otherwise but often times have warning before they appear. If you  get caught in an instant death hazard, you’ll, suitingly enough, die instantly regardless of your current health.

Controls

: The Square button on your controller is a very handy one indeed. Square allows you to use your standard attacks. In Shadow of Umbrella, there are five aerial attacks to use per character, a standard attack, a dash attack and an attack used when tilting the control stick in either an upward, downward or sideways direction. Also keep in mind that some of these attacks can be charged.

: The Triangle button is used to perform your character’s special moves. Each character has four special moves; Up, Down, Side and Neutral…depending on the direction the control stick is pointed in. Special moves are all character specific and crucial for playing the character well.

Also remember that the Triangle button is used to finish off an opponent in the Dying status. When used near an opponent when they’re in the Dying status, your character will use a special move in order to finish off the dying opponent. The range of these moves and their effects depends on the individual character.

: The X button is another important one. With a tap of X, your character will jump and (for some characters) another tap of X will allow them to double jump. Keep in mind that some characters cannot double jump and that each character has a different jump height. Fortunately however, all characters can climb up ledges they grab onto. Because there are no traditional ”ring-outs” in SoU, you’ll never technically be off stage. Jumping however can be used to get to different platforms in the various stages.

: The Circle button is used for grabs. When near an opponent, pressing the Circle button will cause your character to attempt to grab the foe. Each character has a different grab range as well as different grab speeds. After grabbing a foe, pressing the Square button will cause your character to pummel the grabbed foe. From a grabbed state, you can throw the opponent in any of the four cardinal directions. Keep in mind that every character has their own throws as well.

: The Start button simply pauses the game.

Leon S. Kennedy

November 21, 2009

Certainly not small time, Leon S. Kennedy joins the fight!

Leon Scott Kennedy is one of the most fan favorite characters in the entire Resident Evil series. Leon originally appeared in Resident Evil 2 alongside Claire Redfield as a rookie police officer who, on his first day of duty, was thrown directly into the events of Raccoon City. In the events of Resident Evil 2, Leon and Claire destroyed William Birkin’s monster form and escaped the city before it was ultimately destroyed by a nuclear missile. Leon returned in Resident Evil Gaiden; the now non-canon GameBoy Color game that took place entirely on a boat. Considered non-canon because Leon is ultimately revealed to not be human in the ending. This game was entirely removed from the Resident Evil timeline when Resident Evil 4 came out and Leon was the main character once again. Leon, upon being sent to a strange European country in search of the President’s kidnapped daughter finds himself once again involved in mysterious events. This time it’s the Los Illuminados cult, hell bent on spreading their Las Plagas around the world effectively creating a world where their leader, a man named Saddler, could control everyone. Leon ultimately defeated Saddler and ruined the Los Illuminados cult, saving the president’s daughter and returning to America, mission complete.

In Resident Evil 2, Leon was an inexperienced rookie police officer who was very much confused by the events that were happening around him. RE2 did however start his pseudo-relationship with Ada Wong. The friendship between the two has been rocky since the beginning and it’s entirely debatable if they even have a friendship as much as they have a friendly rivalry. In Resident Evil 4, Leon became much more cocky, similar to Capcom’s Dante from Devil May Cry in personality and in appearance. Leon however always fights to accomplish his mission no matter the danger or the odds that are against him. While cocky, Leon always stays focused on what he needs to do and always manages to pull through in the end.

Rocket Launcher

November 19, 2009

The ultimate in destruction!

The Rocket Launcher is an INCREDIBLY powerful projectile weapon found in most every Resident Evil game (usually around the end/during the final boss fight). The Rocket Launcher has attack power far above and beyond most other weapons in the series and is capable of killing almost every enemy in a single shot. Throughout the series, the Rocket Launcher has had various different physical appearances; the one used in SoU is the original however; the Rocket Launcher used to kill the T-002 Tyrant in the end of Resident Evil.

In SoU, the Rocket Launcher is an incredibly powerful and rarely appearing item that has the ability to deliver massive damage and knockback to any target hit by one of its rockets. This Rocket Launcher can fire up to four shots before it runs out of ammo and is rendered useless. After picking up the Rocket Launcher, your character will move considerably slower unless they’re a larger character. The character must then kneel down in order to fire a rocket…however, you -CAN- fire all four rockets back to back without standing back up making it a very powerful item to obtain. If you manage to grab the Rocket Launcher, use it ASAP…but remember not to put yourself at risk when doing so; you may have one of the most powerful weapons around…but it doesn’t mean you’re untouchable…

Also note that some characters are unable to use the Rocket Launcher.

Jill Valentine

November 19, 2009

She’s a member of S.T.A.R.S., Jill Valentine joins the fight!

If Chris is the male face of Resident Evil, Jill Valentine is undoubtably the female face of the series and potentially the only other character to challenge Chris for that face of the series as a whole. Jill has appeared in a great number of games in the series; Resident Evil, Nemesis and Resident Evil 5 are all major roles for Jill. In the first game, Jill was the female playable character opposite Chris. Her version of the game was vastly easier thanks to a larger inventory space, her lockpick and, of course, the Grenade Launcher she finds. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis explains the story behind Jill’s escape from Raccoon City before it was ultimately destroyed. Throughout the game, Jill is pursued by the titular character Nemesis. The events in Resident Evil 5 sums up the Chris/Jill/Wesker plot and has Jill being controlled by Wesker throughout most of the game after her apparent death.

Jill is very strong willed but also very caring about her teammates, especially Chris. While there’s certainly a hinted romance there, the series doesn’t expand upon it enough to prove it in all certainty. Like Chris, Jill also has a deep hatred of Albert Wesker after his betrayal of the S.T.A.R.S. team in the Mansion Incident. Jill is just as resourceful as Chris if not moreso; in fact, she can even make her own ammo if she manages to find the proper materials to do so. After the events in Umbrella Chronicles, Jill joins the B.S.A.A. alongside Chris but seemingly dies when she tackles Albert Wesker out a window in an attempt to take his life as well. With his superhuman endurance, Wesker survived and recovered Jill, using a machine attached to her chest to control her. It is entirely possible that Jill would have died without Wesker’s aid, but that’s only speculation. Chris and Sheva Alomar eventually confront Wesker in an underground facility only to be confronted themselves with the mind-controlled Jill. Through the power of teamwork, Chris and Sheva were able to remove the device from Jill and return her to normal. Jill would later show up in the very end of the game along with Josh in order to save Chris and Sheva from a fiery fate…

Chris Redfield

November 17, 2009

Chris Redfield, arguably the face of Resident Evil, joins the fight!

Appearing in the very first game in the series, Chris Redfield was a member of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team and the main male protagonist. Since then, Chris has also appeared in Resident Evil Code Veronica where he takes the role of the player’s character in the second half of the game. Chris returns once again in Resident Evil 5 in order to investigate  the going ons in Kijuju and, more importantly, finally put an end to his bitter rivalry with Albert Wesker.

Chris has always been one to fight the good fight for the betterment of those around him. He cares deeply for his sister, Claire Redfield, as shown by the fact that he heads off to Rockfort Island in search of her after receiving an urgent message from Leon S. Kennedy. After the events of Code Veronica, Chris joined the B.S.A.A. (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) in an attempt to snub out B.O.W.’s once and for all. Chris always appears to be calm, even in the face of danger and is very resourceful…the only time he seems to break this mold is when Wesker is involved. When his arch-nemesis shows his face, Chris becomes bent on stopping whatever plan the mad man has come up with. In the end however, Chris deems that his duty is needed for the world; despite his hardships, a world without fear is one worth fighting for. Thus, Chris will not stop until the world is rid of B.O.W.’s.
